The Burial of the Sardine is the act that officially closes the Carnival. This centuries-old tradition symbolizes the end of excess and preparation for Lent.

The ceremony begins with a funeral procession loaded with humor and satire, where the sardine –symbol of Carnival– is carried in procession to the burning site. During the route, professional "mourners" lament with theatrical exaggeration the death of Carnival.

The climax arrives when the sardine is burned in a large bonfire, accompanied by music, dances and the last carnival songs of the year. It is an emotional act that marks the end of the festivities but also promises the return of Carnival next year.
